Instructor tests

We conduct instructor tests for licence categories A, B, C, D, CE and DE. As a prospective examiner or instructor for a particular licence category, you must demonstrate safe and skilled driving during the tests.

If you come from an upper secondary school, municipal adult education or the armed forces, you must take an instructor test for all the licence categories for which you are applying for authorisation.

If you are a driving instructor, you need to be able to prove that you have worked as a driving instructor at a driving school for at least one year.

You can book an appointment for an instructor test at Customer service, instructor tests on 0771 17 18 19.

Category A instructor test

In the category A instructor test, you have to show that you are capable of completing your training.

This test assesses your ability to:

  • Ride a motorcycle safely and with skill.
  • Check the motorcycle to ensure it is safe to ride.

Test requirements

You must have a valid category A driving licence.

Vehicle requirements for the test

  • The displacement, kerb weight and power of the motorcycle must meet the requirements set out in the Swedish Transport Agency’s regulations for category A driving tests.
  • The motorcycle must have an adequate maximum load and be suitable for travelling with passengers.

Protective equipment requirements

Protective equipment designed for motorcycle riding must be worn for the test:

  • Clothing must be made of leather or other strong material.
  • Safety goggles, sturdy boot, gloves and a back protector must be worn.
  • The equipment must be undamaged.

What will happen during the motorcycle test

The instructor test will take 120 minutes, including at least 50 minutes of driving in traffic.

You will be asked to complete a full safety check. The examiner may ask you questions during and after this check. You are not allowed to use any tools, such as a checklist.

Manoeuvring

You must be able to demonstrate a good knowledge of manoeuvring, characterised by safety, precision and a very high level of skill.

In the instructor test, you will be asked to drive at a lower speed in the low-speed lane and at a higher speed in the high-speed lane, compared to the speed of the category A driving test.

Examples of elements that may be included in the manoeuvring section:

  • high-speed elements for the driving test
  • giving way to other traffic at 50–70 km/h
  • braking with evasive manoeuvres at 50–70 km/h.

As you drive, you will be driving towards destinations on both low-speed and high-speed roads, and you must be able to describe and justify your actions in different situations. You will also have to drive with passengers for some of the time.

After the test

The examiner will make an overall assessment of your driving, and you will be told your result immediately afterwards. Please note that the requirements for an instructor test are more stringent than for a driving test for the corresponding licence category. To pass the instructor test, you need to have a consistently good driving record and pass the safety check as well.

Your score will be based on a scale of 1 to 6, with 6 being the highest score (consistently very good driving). A score of at least 5 (consistently good driving) and passing the safety check are required to pass the instructor test.
